Ransomware Incidents In 2024 UAE Countries

1. Crypto Ransomware

Incident:

Emirates Oil & Gas Company Breach (2024): In March 2024, a significant oil and gas corporation in the UAE fell victim to a crypto ransomware attack, allegedly executed by the Royal ransomware group. The attackers encrypted essential operational data, including project documentation and financial information, demanding a ransom of $10 million in Bitcoin. This incident caused substantial disruptions to the company's operations, resulting in delays in oil production and export activities. Although the company was able to recover some data from backups, the attack inflicted considerable financial losses and harmed its reputation.


2. Locker Ransomware

Incident:

Dubai Financial Institution Breach (2024): In June 2024, a leading financial institution in Dubai was struck by locker ransomware, which completely locked employees out of their systems. The ransomware rendered all workstations inoperable, preventing access to vital financial data and communication with clients. The attackers requested a ransom of 50 Bitcoin to restore access. The firm was forced to halt operations for nearly a week while collaborating with cybersecurity professionals to regain control, ultimately opting not to pay the ransom.

3. Scareware

Incident:

Fraudulent Emirates Airline Application (2024): In early 2024, a scareware campaign targeted residents of the UAE through a counterfeit Emirates Airline mobile application. The app falsely alerted users that their devices were infected with malware and that their personal information was at risk, demanding a small fee to "eliminate" the nonexistent threats. This scareware particularly affected travelers and airline customers, leading to widespread alarm. Emirates Airline promptly issued warnings to its customers, advising them to steer clear of the fraudulent app and offering instructions on how to remove it from their devices.

4. Doxware

Incident:

Dubai Medical Facility Breach (2024): In August 2024, a private medical facility in Dubai was targeted by doxware attackers who infiltrated patient records and other sensitive information.
